On Thursday 3rd August we held our first members’ monthly meeting of the new season. The proceedings started with our 2023 AGM when the current Committee Members were re-elected for another year.

At the start of the meeting our Chair, Allen informed the members that all future correspondence from the Committee including the monthly Newsletter will now be via email. Due to rising costs, there will be no more printed correspondence.

After the AGM and before our guest speaker Allen on behalf of the committee thanked those members who helped out at our monthly members’ meetings. They each received a box of sweets and a thank you certificate in appreciation of their contribution. Those members were Richard Beachell, Pat Betts, Helen Carter, David Cormack, Ken Franks, Teresa Groom, Jean Skinner, Pete Wilson, & Alice Wright.

Our guest speaker this month was John Hawley who has had a long association with our football club both as a player and as an ambassador.

John who was born in Patrington, first signed as an amateur for Hull City when Harold Needler was the owner. He was paid just £10 per week and trained/played in the morning and worked in his father’s antiques business in the afternoon. John played for Hull City from 1972-78 turning professional in 1976.

During his playing career, he played for several clubs which included Leeds Utd, Sunderland, Arsenal, Bradford City and Scunthorpe Utd where he finished his career in 1986. He even had a short spell playing in America.

It was whilst playing for Bradford City that he was involved with the rescue efforts

during the Bradford City Stadium fire disaster.

At the end of his playing days, John went on to work as a coach in the academy of Nottingham Forest. He now runs his family’s antiques and auctioneering business.

John will be remembered by Hull City fans as a fearless and forceful striker.

To finish off the afternoon we had our usual raffle which raised £218.

Shirley Cormack, Secretary.
