Our monthly members’ meeting on 2nd March was a very special one. All our members were invited for the day to join the committee in the Kingston Suite at the MKM Stadium for a social get-together. We all enjoyed morning refreshments whilst socialising with our friends and other members.

There were football memorabilia on display and on the big screen we could view items from our memorabilia gallery and watch old footage from City’s matches, which brought back memories of the Waggy & Chillo era. Also on display were brochures for Acklams Holidays with their staff on hand to answer any questions.

During the morning we had a very special event when Rob Milner, one of our members had his head shaved in support of his daughter and others who have lost their hair as a consequence of their cancer fight. All the donations he received will go to cancer causes such as MacMillan Nurses and The Queen Elizabeth Centre at Castle Hill Hospital. Following Rob’s ‘Buzz Cut’ we all enjoyed a lovely buffet lunch.

Our afternoon session started with a presentation from Tim Smith, Tour Director of Acklams Holidays. Tim thanked the Senior Tigers for the hospitality. He gave a slideshow presentation on the history of Acklams and explained the services they offer. Especially the team coach they provide for The Tigers.

To top off a brilliant day our guest speaker was our very own Nick Barmby interviewed by Richard Beachell who said it was a privilege to interview Nick. Nick talked about how as a youngster he played football for Hall Road and after going to Boothferry Park to watch The Tigers he knew he wanted to play for them. Football was his passion and at 16 signed a contract with Tottenham. Two years after joining them he made his debut in a testimonial game at Boothferry Park. During his career, he played 23 games for England and was disappointed to miss out on a World Cup through injury.

Later joining Nick and Richard on stage was Brendan Smurthwaite who was Hull City’s Press Officer from 2001 to 2011. During his time at Hull City, he set up the club website and created the ‘City Magazine’. Both Nick and Brendan talked about City’s promotion season to the Premier League. What an incredible season it was. To see black and amber down Wembley Way was a once in a lifetime experience. The first year in the Premier League Brendan said was surreal and City winning their first home Premier League game at the KC Stadium was a special memory.

Nick finished off by saying his 1st cap for England was special and an achievement but coming back to Hull and playing for Hull City was an honour.

Pat gave our usual vote of thanks to Nick and we all said what a fantastic interview it had been.
